This is the area of Minnesota within USGS 1:100,000 scale tile-sheets 1910 (Ada), 2310 (Fargo), and 2710 (Wahpeton).

LineageThis coverage is derived from several sources. How they were eventually combined has not been documented. The most likely explanation is that the ARCEDIT command 'get' was used to bring polygon and line features of the four aquifers into a single coverage.

The Buffalo Aquifer

  • This is a collection of two surficial geology types from the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS)'s surficial geology coverage: 'Ql/g (Thin lake sediment over sand and gravel),' and 'Ql/n (Nearshore sediment).' If wells within a particular 'nearshore sediment' polygon had sediment texture characteristics similar to the characteristics of 'thin lake sediment over sand and gravel' (based on Couny Well Index geology information), then the polygon was considered to be part of the Buffalo Aquifer.
Unnamed Aquifer
  • Mike Trojan used County Well Index Well Log data to estimate sand thickness at each well location. A 1:200,000 scale plot showing these points and their estimated sand thickness values in feet, was created in ARCPLOT.
  • 'Qls (Shoreline sediment)' polygons from MGS' surficial geology map which were in areas where sand thickness was estimated to be greater than 20 feet (based on comparisons with the sand thickness plot) were selected.
Pelican River Aquifer
  • A 1:200,000 scale template showing county boundaries was created in ARCPLOT.
  • Mike Trojan hand-drew the Pelican River Aquifer onto the template by copying the outline of this aquifer from one the 1:126,720 scale maps of it featured in "PLATE 1 - HYDROGEOLOGIC MAPS OF THE SURFICIAL-OUTWASH AQUIFER" from the USGS report, "THE APPRAISAL OF THE PELICAN RIVER SAND-PLAIN AQUIFER, WESTERN MINNESOTA. (1972)"
  • The outline was digitized in ARCEDIT.
Wahpeton Aquifer
  • A 1:200,000 scale template showing the wells from County Well Index with well depth values of 240 ft. or greater was created in ARCPLOT. 
  • Mike Trojan drew this aquifer on the template by outlining clusters of wells with similar cation / anion characteristics. See Mike Trojan ('Contact Person' above) for more detailed information about the chemical characteristics used to delineate this aquifer.
  • The aquifer was digitized in ARCEDIT.
