Lineage  Make the coverage:
  • A coverage was made by selecting sand and gravel and organic deposits from the MGS' surficial geology coverage
  • The study area boundary was added (ARCEDIT 'get' command), the coverage was built as a polygon coverage, and the item 'dissnum' was added.
  • All sand and gravel deposits were given a 'dissnum' value of 1. Organics were given a 'dissnum' value of 2, and the coverage was dissolved on the item 'dissnum.'
  • All arcs defining polygons that are neither sand and gravel nor organic deposits (The arcs of polygons with 'dissnum' value of 0 after the dissolve) were given a coverage-id value of -1, so that organic deposits don't get eliminated into such polygons when the ARC 'eliminate' command is applied. Arcs with negative cover-id values are immune from the 'eliminate' command.
  • The ARC 'eliminate' command was applied to get organic deposits to be 'swallowed up' by contiguous sand and gravel features. Organic deposits surrounded by or contiguous to  'background' (dissnum = 0) polygons remain intact.
  • The item 'sagrorg' was added, and given a 'y' value for polygons where 'dissnum' = 1 (At this point, this reflects all sand and gravel deposits, which were given this value earlier, plus the organic deposits that got eliminated into them.'). 'sagrorg' = 'y' indicates a polygon that is either a sand and gravel deposit or a contiguous organic deposit, and can be used in the pollution sensitivity analysis.
  • The resulting coverage was unioned with the unmodified coverage of sand and gravel and organic deposits.

  • Polygons with the 'unit_code' value of 'Qsld' (Coarse textured stream sediments overlain by up to 10 feet of finer textured sediments) 
Moderate
  • All other areas were giving a rating of 'M' - moderate.
