Native perennials, to 4'. Conspicuously profuse in open areas, Aug-Sept. The outer petal-like ray flowers on asters vary from white to pink or blue, and they surround tiny central yellow flowers. Minnesota has a dozen species of these highly variable plants. Large-leaved aster is common and forms a leafy ground cover; widespread in aspen forests. Aster is derived from the Greek word for star.
