Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

Perennial herb sends up a single flower with 8 white petals in May, followed by a single, 3-9 lobed, round leaf. Plant is 2-6" tall at flowering. Red-orange sap ?bleeds? from broken rhizomes (underground stems), hence the common name Bloodroot and the genus Sanguinaria. Found in rich deciduous woods and floodplain forests.
