Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis)

A common low-growing herb, covering the forest floor and spreading by connecting underground stems. Four to six leaves are whorled just below the flower, which is composed of 4 petal-like white bracts surrounding tiny flowers in the center. Bright red clusters of fruits are formed in mid-summer and are eaten by wildlife. Bunchberry is the only non-woody dogwood.
