Downy gentian (Gentiana puberulenta)

Low perennial, to 1 foot tall. Smooth, opposite, pointed leaves with a single prominent vein. Flowers 11/2 inches across at top of stem; bluish purple with 5 spreading, pointed lobes. Dry to mesic prairies. Blooms September. Genus said to be named after King Gentius of Illyria.
