Flodman's thistle (Cirsium flodmanii )
Native thistle. White-wooly on undersides of its deeply lobed leaves. Flowering head 1 to 11/2 inches across; small rose-purple flowers; mid to late summer. Plants to 3 feet high. The small fruits (achenes) of thistles have plumes of soft bristles (the pappus) used by American Goldfinches as nesting material.
