Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora)
Native perennial saprophyte containing no chlorophyll and, like coral-root, taking nourishment from fungi in the soil. Grows in clusters in low-light, moist woods. The entire plant is white, becoming dark and brittle in age. A single flower nods at the tip of the 6" plant, becoming straight in fruit. A similar yellowish plant, pinesap, bears several flowers on each stalk.
