Small purple fringed orchid photograph; ? MN DNR, M. D. Lee

A 1-2' tall orchid of wet or damp habitats, including ditches. The 20 to 125 purple flowers are clustered at the top of the stalk; bloom in July-August. Each flower has a lip divided into 3 fan-shaped parts with fringed edges and a long spur. Leaves are oblong, alternate on the stalk, and become smaller near the flower cluster.
