Low-growing perennials bloom in May-June. Violets may be white, yellow, blue or purple. Numerous species occur in Minnesota. Each flower has 5 petals, one having a spur. Leaf shapes vary from round to heart-shaped; leaves may or may not be hairy. Grouse and small mammals eat the seeds.
