Perennial legume with slender stems and numerous small white flowers arranged in dense cylindrical spikes, blooming July-August. Leaves alternate on stems, compound, with 3 to 9 narrow leaflets. Flowers bloom from bottom of spike to top. Drought tolerant, deep-rooted. Dry to mesic prairie; somewhat less common than purple prairie-clover. Used by American Indians for food, tea, and medicine.
