Summer flowering. Basal, linear leaves. Single, terminal cluster of pinkish flowers with 6 tepals (petals and sepals that look alike). Fruit a small, round capsule. Mesic and dry prairies. Plant arises from a bulb resembling a small, domestic onion. Bulb used by American Indians as food and medicine. Strong, onion-like odor.
