Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)

A common low growing perennial herb, found in sandy soils. Leathery, lustrous leaves release a wintergreen odor when bruised. Flowers in June. White, urn-shaped flowers are inconspicuous, but bright red fruits appear in the fall. Oil of wintergreen is used in medicine and foods. Birds eat the leaves and fruit, as do mammals.
