Red Lake WMA
Directions: From Roosevelt, go 1.5 miles W on Twp. Rd., then 15 miles S on the Norris-Roosevelt State Forest Road to the RLWMA headquarters at Norris Camp.
Description: This WMA is the largest in the state. It 's located within the Beltrami Island State Forest and is composed of ancient glacial Lake Agassiz beach ridges of upland forest surrounded by extensive wetlands of open bog, brushlands, and lowland forest.
There are 25 forest hunter walking trails. These trails are mowed and maps are located at each trail head.
The Red Lake WMA headquarters, Norris Camp, is an old CCC camp that is on the National List of Historic Places.
The Schultz Walking Trail (2 miles south of Norris Camp) is maintained for wheelchair access.
This WMA is a good place for grouse, deer, and woodcock hunting. A lot of timber is harvested off of this unit. Bird watchers come from all over the country looking for species such as the spruce grouse, black-backed woodpecker, and Connecticut warbler.
At this scale, these WMA boundaries are general, and do not accurately represent the actual legal boundaries. WMA users still need to verify public lands boundaries by observing boundary signs and contacting local DNR Wildlife offices.
