Central Minnesota CWD surveillance area

Map highlighting the DPAs included in the central CWD surveillance area: 277, 283, 219, 285.

General information

In 2017, a deer at a deer farm in Meeker County tested positive for chronic wasting disease. The DNR implemented its response plan, which calls for three years of surveillance in the area around the facility. Since then, there have been no detections of CWD in wild deer. Because no wild deer positives were detected in the central surveillance area in its third consecutive year of testing, there will be no more surveillance efforts in this area during the 2020 hunting season.

The central Minnesota surveillance area includes deer permit areas 277 and 283 east of State Trunk Highway 4, deer permit area 219 south of State Trunk Highway 55, and deer permit area 285 north of State Trunk Highway 7.

CWD sampling and testing

Mandatory CWD surveillance will take place during the first two days of the firearms season (Nov. 9-10), within approximately 15 miles of the CWD positive deer farm in Meeker County.

During this weekend, all adult deer must be presented in person at a CWD sampling station on the same day of harvest. Fawns will not be tested but must be presented to confirm age by a DNR official.

Is this area affected by carcass movement restrictions?

No. There are no carcass movement restrictions for deer taken in the central CWD surveillance area, or any area outside of a CWD management or control zone.

What can I harvest?

All regular season rules apply. There are no special restrictions or exceptions on harvest in this area.

Taxidermist information for sampling trophy deer

The taxidermists listed below are trained in sample collection. If you bring your trophy deer to one of these taxidermists to have it caped or mounted, the taxidermist will collect the lymph node samples and deliver them to the DNR for testing. If you use one of these taxidermists, you will satisfy the mandatory sampling requirements. Once your deer is caped and the skull plate removed, you can bring the cape and cleaned skull plate with attached antlers to your taxidermist of choice for final mounting.

Using a taxidermist for sampling will result in a longer turnaround time for your CWD test results.

Other taxidermists in this area can be used if the caped out head is brought to a sampling station.
