Creating, editing, deleting and adding TOPICS

Topics are the lists of links in the green "Related pages" boxes on the right-hand side of the screen. These links are critical for helping web users navigate effectively to important information and help them avoid getting lost in the site.

Select "Edit Navigation Topics"
Edit navigation topics option in Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Web site content management system control panel.

Creating a topic

Adding topics to a category will place those topics on every page within that category and its subcategories unless those pages or subcategories have topics specifically assigned to them. If you add topics to a category, you do not need to add those same topics to each page in that category, unless a page should have different topics than the category.

  • Select "Edit Navigation Topics" in the CMS control panel. This will bring up the "Navigation Topics" window.
  • Select "Create new topic" from the left-hand frame.
  • Give the topic a name. This name will appear in the "Related pages" boxes on the right-hand side of pages
  • Make sure the topic name is short.
  • Click "Add Topic."
  • Find your new topic name in the left-hand frame and click on it.
  • In the right-hand frame, type in the "Link Title" field the first link in the topic.
  • For the "Link URL" field click on "Use link picker" and browse through the categories to find the page to which you want to link. Click on the name of the page (on the right-hand side); the URL is added automatically to the "Link URL" field.
  • If you type in a URL by hand, you must enter everything except the http://www.dnr.state.mn.us
  • Assign the link a "Link priority." This determines the order in which the links appear when this topic shows up on a page.
  • Start with priority "0" (link shows up first on the list on the page); continue with priorities "1" and up.
  • If two links in the topic have the same priority number, they will show up on a page in alphabetical order.
  • Each link must have a priority number; otherwise is disappears
  • Click "Add new link to topic" button.
  • Continue adding links to the topic until you have completed the list.
  • Topics can contain unlimited numbers of links, but try keeping topics to about seven to ten or fewer links.
  • If the list grows larger than seven to ten links, consider breaking the list into several separate lists.
