Lineage | This coverage was created by incorporating portions of MGS' depth-to-bedrock and bedrock geology coverages, an interior one-third mile buffer of the Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit, and a line separating the part of the county with many lakes from the part with few lakes. In addition, Moira Campion worked with various GIS specialists to make numerous adjustments based on professional judgement. These interactive adjustments were based on many criteria, including educated speculation and intuition, and cannot be completely documented. This report will explain as much as possible. The interior one-third mile buffer of the Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit was created by buffering the edge of the confining unit and deleting the buffer line outside the confining unit. Moira Campion hand-drew a line separating the part of the county with few lakes from the rest of the county where lakes are more plentiful. This line was digitized into the coverage. When the coverage was completed, the attribute 'codeleg' was added to the polygon attribute table, and given appropriate values. (NOTE: The geologic meaning of the codes is explained below in the 'Entity and Attribute Information' section. This section explains how the GIS data were compiled.) DERIVATION OF 'CODELEG' VALUES: |
aqs Polygons from MGS' depth-to-bedrock coverage where depth-to-bedrock is less than 50 ft and the bedrock is not part of the DPG confining unit.
ecu The interior one-third mile buffer of the Decorah-Platteville-Glennwood confining unit (representing the eroded edge) where it intersects those polygons from MGS' depth-to-bedrock coverage where depth-to-bedrock = less than 50 ft.
bcu Primarily, this is the interior one-third mile buffer of the Decorah-Platteville-Glennwood confining unit (representing the eroded edge) where it intersects those polygons from MGS' depth-to-bedrock coverage where depth-to-bedrock is greater than 50 ft. Three Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit polygons (selected from MGS' bedrock geology coverage) where depth-to-bedrock is greater than 50 ft. are also included, two in the northeast and one on the southern border to the west. Additional adjustments were made based on interpretation by Moira Campion.
tpw These are areas in eastern Rice County that are more than 50 ft. below the surface, not within the area covered by Des Moines Till, and not part of the Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit. These polygons were acquired from the following sources:
| |
twl That portion of the area southeast of the line separating the part of the county with many lakes from the part of the county with few lakes which was left over after 'aqs,' 'alo,' 'ecu,' 'bcu,' 'tpw,' and 'ccu' were coded. The line separating the part of the county with many lakes from that part with few lakes was hand-drawn by Moira Campion and digitized at a scale of 1:63,360
tfl The area northwest of the line separating the 'many lakes' part of the county from the 'few lakes' part.
ccu That part of the Decorah-Platteville-Glenwood confining unit not within the one-third mile buffer - the uneroded portion of the confining unit.
