LineageThe following layers were combined with the ARC 'union' command to create the pollution sensitivity coverage, and the appropriate attributes were used to assess pollution sensitivity ratings:
  • Surficial geology from Part A, Plate 3, published by the MGS, 1995. Sediment permeability class values were determined by Jan Falteisek. Geologic units were classified into four categories from least to most permeable.
  • Depth -to-water polygon coverage created from a SURFER file of interpolated, 1000-ft.-interval depth-to-water values kriged from field measurements that Mike Trojan made. See metadata for 'dtwpy.'
The following three layers allowed for the selective application of higher sensitivity ratings to areas with special conditions:
  • Geomorphology of Minnesota - generalized surficial geology layer created by the University of Minnesota, Duluth, the MGS, and the Minnesota DNR. See Geomorphology of Minnesota on the Minnesota Geospatial Commons website for detailed metadata for this coverage. Polygons representing the Red River lobe and the Big Stone geologic phase were selected and given higher sensitivity ratings than the model would have otherwise provided.
  • Pelican River Aquifer digitized by Randy McGregor from USGS manuscript (USGS, 1982, The Appraisal of the Pelican River Sand-Plain Aquifer, Western Minnesota).The scale of the manuscript was 1:26,720. 
  • Part of an unnamed aquifer in southwestern Otter Tail County digitized by the USGS from its map of major aquifers in the region (D.L Lorenz and J.D. Stoner, 1996, Sampling Design for Assessing Water Quality of the Red River of the North Basin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, 1993-1995, Water Investigations Report 96-412). Pollution sensitivity ratings were applied based on criteria explained in RHA-3, Part B, Plate 4, then the ARC 'dissolve' command was used on the sensitivity rating item.

The ARC 'eliminate' command removed polygons of 1000 square meters or smaller.
