Lineage | The primary data used to construct the thickness DEM grid file was derived from located and unlocated well logs in the county well index (CWI) database managed by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Geological Survey which was supplemented by test boring logs from the US Geological Survey and surface resistivity data that were collected by DNR Waters personnel during the summers of 2004 through 2006. These data were combined into two data files with location, elevation, and depth and lithology information. Using a custom ArcGIS 9 extension (DNR Waters Stick Diagrams) 66 west-east geologic cross sections were created, interpreted, and the stratigraphic contacts were digitized as line files in ArcGIS 9.X by Jim Berg. Using another custom DNR extension (DNR Waters get XYZ points) the vertices of the shapefile lines were converted to point shapefiles that also have elevation above MSL as an attribute. To create this file the points that defined the base of each aquifer were selected to create part of the dataset that was interpolated using a spline tension method with default parameters in Arc GIS 9.X into a grid file that represents the bottom each aquifer. A second point file was created to represent the elevation of the aquifer top. These points were also interpolated using a spline tension method with default parameters in ArcGIS 9.X. Each aquifer bottom DEM was subtracted from its respective aquifer top DEM to produce a thickness grid file. The final raster was converted to a polyline shapefile using a contour surface analysis in ArcGIS 9.X Spatial Analyst. |
