Lineage | The primary data used to construct this file was derived from well logs in the County Well Index (CWI) database managed by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) with verified locations. Using a custom ArcGIS 9 extension (DNR Waters Stick Diagrams) 66 west-east geologic cross sections were created, interpreted, and the stratigraphic contacts were digitized as line files in ArcGIS 9.X. Using another custom DNR extension (DNR Waters get XYZ points) the vertices of the shapefile lines are converted to point shapefiles that also have elevation above MSL as an attribute. To create this file the points that defined the base of the surficial sand layer were selected to create part of the dataset that was interpolated into a grid file that represents the bottom of the surficial sand. A second point file was created to represent the land surface elevation around the edge of the surficial sand. This file was created by selecting the surficial sand polygons from the MGS surficial geology file, dissolving the boundaries between the polygons, and creating a file with points at 100 meter intervals along the boundaries of the surface sand with ArcGIS 9.X. Surface elevation values from a land surface DEM were added to the point records as an elevation field using ArcGIS. These two point shape files were merged. Then a third data set of assumed or estimated surficial sand bottom elevations was created for certain areas where very little well data were available and incorporated into the merged shape file. The resulting point file was interpolated using a spline tension method with default parameters in Arc GIS 9.2. The resulting grid elevation file was subtracted from the land surface DEM to produce a thickness grid file of the surficial sand. The final raster was converted to a polygon shapefile. |
