Lineage | The water table surface is depicted on Plate 3 with contour lines at 50-foot intervals. Delineation of these contour lines relied on several sources of information. In the outwash terrains the following sources were used in order of priority: 1) field measurements of water levels in wells completed in the water table aquifer that were collected during Fall, 1999, and observation well data from this same time period, 2) surface water bodies were assumed to be a surface expression of the water table and their elevations were obtained from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 1:24,000-scale topographic maps, 3) average depth to water measurements in outwash were used to subtract 20 feet from a surface contour where ground water data were lacking, 4) water level measurements from the time of drilling were obtained from the County Well Index (CWI) of water table aquifer wells, and 5) a USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was used to verify the reasonableness of the results. In the moraine terrains where no wells are completed in the saturated till below the water table the following information was used, in order of priority: 1) the elevation of the transition from oxidized sediment to reduced sediment shown in a CWI well log as the depth of the first blue or gray unit; the actual elevation of saturated material is believed to be slightly higher, however an adjustment was not made here due to the small scale of the map [1:200,000 with a 50-foot contour interval], 2) seismic refraction that measures differences between unsaturated and saturated sediments resulted in the determination of the water table at 9 sites [too few to give this a higher priority], 3) surface water bodies were assumed to be a surface expression of the water table, 4) the average depth to the first reduced sediment in the moraines was used to subtract 20-30 feet from a surface contour where data were lacking, and 5) a USGS DEM was used to verify the reasonableness of the results. The end result of a 1:200,000 scale map necessitated smoothing of the contour lines, consequently, zooming in to a larger scale on an electronic map may result in erroneous interpretation. | ||||||||||||
