A very unstable air mass and strong winds aloft produced a variety of severe weather and heavy rainfall across Minnesota. The hardest-hit areas were from west-central Minnesota, into the Twin Cities and southeastern part of the state, generally along and south of I-94. Severe weather also affected northern and northeastern Minnesota, from the Grand Rapids area to north of Duluth.
The active day began early in the morning, as repeated strong thunderstorms paraded over west-central Minnesota, producing heavy rainfall and reports of flooding. The official NWS cooperative observer at Morris reported 4.51 inches, and a COCORAHS observer just south-southeast of town recorded 5.23 inches. That observer received an additional 0.83" from additional storms later in the day, pushing the 24-hour total to over six inches.
By mid-afternoon, two intense thunderstorm cells developed near the same areas that had received heavy rainfall earlier in the day. The first and farther-east of these storms produced 60-70 mph winds and a swath of damage to trees, powerlines, and a few structures, from Paynesville in southern Stearns County, to the northwestern suburbs of Minneapolis, and into western Wisconsin. The second cell produced reported tornadoes early on near Appleton in Swift County, and also produced a swath of 1-2" hail from the Appleton area, through Hutchinson and Glencoe in McLeod County. Interestingly, this storm did not cause any significant wind damage while it was producing large hail. However, as it entered the southwestern parts of the Twin Cities area, it stopped producing hail and began toppling trees and power lines.
Xcel energy estimated that up to 250,000 customers lost power.
Eventually, both cells consolidated into a large complex with bow-shaped segments, and dove southeastward towards Iowa and southern Wisconsin. It continued producing occasionally significant damage from winds and short-lived tornadoes. Please see the La Crosse NWS office's storm event summary for additional information.
150-200 miles to the north of most of the severe weather activity, a compact and intense line of thunderstorms also produced 60-70 mph winds and knocked down trees and powerlines. Most of the damage and strong wind reports were in a streak from Itasca County, including the Grand Rapids area, to just north of Duluth. As of this writing, additional damage reports are still coming into the NWS Duluth office, which has created a summary of the event.
The stormy afternoon and evening resulted in widespread heavy rainfall totals, especially in the southern part of the state. 1-2" storm totals were common, with stations in the northern Twin Cities area recording over 2 inches of rain. An observer in Roseville received 3.53 inches of rain, which was largest amount noted in Minnesota from main round of activity.
