Severe Storms and Some Needed Rains: July 10, 2008

A cluster of thunderstorms moved from northwest to southeastern North Dakota during the early morning hours of July 10th. These storms were associated with a cool front from Fargo to Duluth. The storms moved into west central Minnesota just after sunrise and moved to the east and southeast across the state dropping heavy rains, some large hail and damaging winds. The brunt of the storm hit the southern Twin Cities metro area. Water was up to car windows on 98th street at the intersections of Normandale and Hennepin. Golf ball-size hail was reported at Lester Prairie in McLeod County. There were numerous reports of tree damage.

Dakota and Goodhue Counties were hit especially hard. A weak tornado touched down five miles west of Vermillion in Dakota County. The path was six miles long and caused minor damage to houses and sheds. To the south of the tornado track was a two to three mile wide swath of straight line wind damage. A second tornado touched down three miles east of Vasta in Goodhuse County and caused tree damage, along with damage to homes and sheds. Straight line winds also caused damage in Goodhue County.

Despite the severe weather, the rainfall was most welcome for those who have been looking at parched lawns. Unfortunately, the needed rains fell in a relatively narrow band. Some places picked up three-quarters of an inch, while many places received a tenth of an inch or less. The heaviest rain reported was 1.80 inches in 30 minutes at Rosemont. About.90 inches fell at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie. Alexandria had .80 inches, with most of that occurring in one hour. The Twin Cities International Airport saw .77 inches of rain in one hour. The main problem with the street flooding was the intensity of the rainfall, not the total amount. Rainfall rates dropped off rapidly north of the downtowns with Crystal Airport seeing .14 and the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota also measuring .14 inches. More beneficial rainfall fell during the wee hours of the morning of July 11th, dropping around a half an inch across the Twin Cities.
