Severe Storms: April 10, 2011

Severe Storms Strike Parts of Northeast and Extreme Southeast Minnesota: April 10, 2011

The first severe thunderstorm outbreak of the season for Minnesota hit during the day on Sunday, April 10. A low pressure area centered over Sioux Falls during the early morning hours of April 10 moved to Duluth by evening. Warm muggy air surged northward out ahead of a cold front that marched to the east across the state. The air felt downright tropical during the midday hours on April 10 over central and southern Minnesota as temperatures surged into the mid 70's and dew point temperatures were in the low to mid 60's.

Strong thunderstorms developed by late morning and turned severe over parts of northeast Minnesota, with severe thunderstorms developing during the late afternoon and evening hours over far southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin. In Northeastern Minnesota, large hail was reported in parts of Itasca, Cook, and St. Louis Counties. In southeast Minnesota, a barn was blown down and a mobile home was knocked off its foundation north of Caledonia due to straight-line severe thunderstorm winds. Baseball-sized hail was reported at Hokah with enough hail to cover the ground. The Minnesota storms were only part of a larger severe storm outbreak over the midwest.

Some unwelcomed heavy rain fell as well with the storms over parts of Northwest Minnesota with just over 2 inches reported at a volunteer rain gage monitoring site in central Clearwater County.

Behind the cold front chilly air rushed in the state and temperatures dropped by 25 degrees over the course of five hours during the evening in the Twin Cities from the mid 70's to the low 50's.
