A long duration winter storm began over Minnesota on April 9th with a crippling ice storm for southwest Minnesota and a quick burst of heavy snow elsewhere. The Twin Cities saw 1.4 inches of snow from this first wave. Another round of snow hit the state late in the day on April 10 and continued through the 11th. Snow also continued across mainly central and northern Minnesota on April 12. The highest snow total found so far was 14.2 inches at Wrenshall in Carton County. Not far behind was 13 inches 2 miles NW of Redwood Falls. The three day total from April 9-11 at the Twin Cities International Airport was 5.8 inches with 4.4 inches falling on April 11.
Driving became difficult with slush on roads becoming packed ice during the morning of April 11. The Hiawatha Light Rail was out of service due to the heavy snow.
