December sauna, December 13-15, 2014

Warm, muggy air surged northward out ahead of a cold front and low pressure system that was located over Kansas at midnight on December 15. The soggy air continued to support plenty of clouds and fog. In fact, December 15 marked the ninth day in a row of mostly cloudy to cloudy conditions in the Twin Cities. The record for consecutive days of zero minutes of sunshine is 15 days from October 30 to November 13, 1972. A close second is 14 days from December 26, 1991 to January 8, 1992.

The warm and muggy conditions of December 13-15 broke temperature records in the Twin Cities. The record high temperature of December 15 was broken with a high of 51 degrees that was reached at 4:45am. This broke the old record of 49 degrees set in 1923. In addition, a new warm minimum record was set on December 14 with a low of 43 degrees. This broke the old record of 38 degrees in 1891.

The dew point temperature of 49 degrees on December 15, not only set the record for the date (old record was 39 degrees) it also is the warmest dew point temperature so late in December.

Of course, the record warm air was not just confined to the Twin Cities.
