The latest in a series of major winter storms brought heavy, wet accumulating snow to Minnesota, along with rain and sleet in the eastern and southern parts of the state.
Precipitation developed in association with a strong low pressure system that tracked from Colorado, into Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and Lake Michigan. This storm track has been a mainstay of the second half of the 2018-19 winter, and has been responsible for excessive snowfall totals (link to record snows of February) since late January.
An area of very heavy snow surged northward through the western 1/4 of Minnesota on the morning of Saturday March 9th, 2019. The snow continued for over 12 hours in many areas and led to the highest accumulations in the state. Across southern Minnesota, warm air led to several hours of rain and occasional sleet, before changing over to heavy snow Saturday evening. Although the rain was generally light or briefly moderate by most standards, snow-blocked sewer grates left the rain nowhere to go, submerging intersections and low spots in cities and towns throughout southern Minnesota. Once precipitation changed over to snow, it began accumulating quickly, and by 7 PM on Saturday, roads and highways throughout the state were reporting vehicle spin-outs and accidents. The snow continued through the night in many areas.
Unlike its many predecessors, this storm had a lot of warm air and very high moisture content, leading to rainfall of up to a half-inch in southern Minnesota, along with heavy, wet, sticky snow elsewhere. The vast majority of the state received between a half-inch and 1.25 inches of precipitation. The snow was difficult to clear, and the added weight of the rain or heavy, wet snow led to roof collapses in northwestern Minnesota, including at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Moorhead. The roof over the pool at the Holiday Inn Express in Winona also gave way after rain and then snow added to its load. Public health officials throughout the state posted warnings about risks from overexertion during shoveling and roof-clearing.
Northwestern Minnesota easily claimed the largest snowfall accumulations from this storm. Prolonged intense snowfall led to a general north-to-south swath, from Red Lake Falls down to Benson, and west to the border with the Dakotas, receiving 10-15 inches of snow. The highest totals included 15. 6 inches north-northwest of Cormorant; 15 inches near Herman and Pelican Rapids; 14.1 inches at Rothsay; 13 inches at Erskine; 12.5 inches at Fergus Falls; and 12 inches at Breckenridge, Holloway, and Red Lake Falls.
A large area surrounding the highest totals received at least 8 inches of snow. This area covered over 1/3 of the state, and stretched from Lake of the Woods, to Brainerd, to St. Cloud and Hutchinson, and westward to Canby. In fact, all but the southeastern and northeastern corners of Minnesota saw at least 4 inches of snowfall accumulation. Indeed, it was another widespread, heavy snowfall event for Minnesota.
Various National Weather Service forecast offices around the region assembled the following snowfall totals from this event.
