April fooled much of Minnesota with a strong cold front that dropped temperatures from the 50s and 60s into the teens and 20s. The air mass transition produced heavy wintry precipitation in northwestern parts of the state, with light precipitation elsewhere.
A mild air mass was in place on Wednesday April 1st, as a strong cold front associated approached Minnesota slowly from the Dakotas. Moisture streaming into the state allowed pockets of light precipitation to break out across western Minnesota by afternoon and evening.
The most consequential precipitation developed during the early morning of Thursday April 2, as moderate rain changed to freezing rain and snow. Snow fell heavily throughout much of the day north of Detroit Lakes and west of Red Lake and Lake of the Woods. Freezing rain and some sleet covered a much larger area to the east, with ice accumulating to around 1/4 inch near Bemidji, Park Rapids, and Alexandria. By Thursday afternoon, a razor-sharp temperature boundary cut through the western third of Minnesota, with temperatures dropping from the high 50s F into the mid and upper 20s over distances of just 50 miles.
Light freezing rain and sleet eventually spread over the rest of Minnesota on Thursday afternoon and evening, with additional waves of sleet and snow falling into Friday afternoon, amid stiff northwesterly winds. Over 80 Minnesota counties were covered by Winter Weather Advisories or Winter Storm Warnings at some point during the storm.
The heaviest snowfall totals were reported near Karlstad in Roseau County, where the National Weather Service received public reports of up to 16 inches of snow. The northwestern corner of the state, generally west of a line from Rothsay to Roseau, received six inches of snow or more.
The following reports were received and shared by the National Weather Service forecast office in Grand Forks, ND.
