Winter has arrived for a large swath of the Midwest. A potent winter storm brought heavy accumulating snow to the south of the Twin Cities area. Snowfall totals up to 18 inches were reported from the Sioux Falls area east to just north of Chicago. A larger area of over 6 inches of snow was reported from Nebraska to northern Illinois. Sioux Falls broke a daily snowfall record with 7.2 inches of snow falling. Cold air already in place prior to the winter storm caused snow to be the main form of precipitation, which lead to the high snowfall totals.
In Minnesota the snow stayed mainly along the I-90 corridor. The heaviest totals were seen in the southwest corner of the state, with Worthington receiving the most snow at 8 inches. Across the rest of southern Minnesota totals of 1 to 4 inches were common. Austin reported 3 inches, Rochester International Airport received 1.2 inches, and Winona picked up 0.3 inches of snow. While this was not a major snowfall event for most of Minnesota, it did produce the first measurable snow in the southern portion of the state.
Below is a list of snowfall reports gathered by the National Weather Service in La Crosse.
