Status of the Fishery (as of 09/22/1999)

Lake Elizabeth is a 323-acre lake with a maximum depth of 5 feet located in Isanti County near the town of Cambridge. The lake is known to frequently experience fish winterkills of some degree and has been used in the past as a walleye rearing pond. Currently, Lake Elizabeth is classified as a State Game Refuge. Hunting of geese and ducks is prohibited except when specifically opened during special seasons (see Waterfowl Hunting Regulations Supplement). Other forms of hunting and trapping are allowed during their listed seasons. Fishing is also allowed during the appropreiate season dates. A special assessment was conducted during the open water season of 1999 to develop a fish species composition list. Eight trap net sets captured 36 black crappie from 3.9 to 8.4 inches, 22 bluegill sunfish from 2.0 to 7.8 inches, 1 hybrid sunfish at 7.7 inches, 2 northern pike at 21.8 and 31.1 inches, 1 pumpkinseed sunfish at 6.9 inches, and 24 painted turtles. Black crappie and northern pike showed reproductive success. Fish communities will probably experience fluctuations due to frequent fish winterkills of varying intensities.
