Route details

Launch at the University of Minnesota East River Flats Park (RM 852.5), in Minneapolis, MN, and paddle 5 miles to Hidden Falls Park (RM 847.4), in St. Paul, MN. This trip will take about 2 hours for the average paddler.

Route description

This section of the Mississippi River requires a moderate degree of paddling skills to navigate the swift current and large wakes created by large boats and barges. Take caution and follow the procedure for using the navigational locks.

Integral to the early settlement of Minnesota, a paddle down this portion Mississippi River is an excellent way to reconnect with our state's great history. Paddlers will also have a chance to participate in something unique and unusual by paddling through a lock and dam. To the surprise of many, wildlife can be seen throughout this short stretch of the river corridor. Paddlers will have the chance to see the occasional white-tail deer, fox, bald eagle, and songbirds. Anglers also enjoy this stretch of river when pursuing smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike and muskie.
