Freemont WMA

County: Sherburne
Nearest Town: Zimmerman
Area: 165 ac

Directions: North 50 acre unit: 1 mile west of Zimmerman within Sec. 7, T34N, R26W. South 120 acre unit: 1 mile south of Zimmerman within Sec.17, T34N, R26W.

Restrictions: The south unit is within the city limits of Zimmerman which has a shooting restriction ordinance in place. As of 2003 archery deer hunting is allowed on the WMA. Please respect property boundaries and ask for permission before going on private lands.

Description: North Unit: Area is mostly burr/pin oak forest community with scattered openings. A larger sedge/cattail wetland flanks the border. South Unit: Area is approximately 1/3 remnant prairie, 1/3 wetland, and 1/3 burr/pin oak forest.

Good opportunities exist for hunting, trapping, wildlife viewing, and hiking. As with many WMAs, more remote areas of this unit are visited by people less and offer solitude and discovery for those willing to explore.

The original prairie component on the south unit is very noteworthy and offers visitors a view into the past. The City of 'Zimmerman is expanding the developed portion of the city up to and around the 2 units. These are wonderful areas to explore.

At this scale, these WMA boundaries are general, and do not accurately represent the actual legal boundaries. WMA users still need to verify public lands boundaries by observing boundary signs and contacting local DNR Wildlife offices.
