Governor's Council on Minnesota's Coastal Program
An essential component of Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program is the Governor's Council on Minnesota's Coastal Program. The Council makes recommendations to the Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources on grant priorities, projects to receive grant funding, and the program's annual administrative budget.
The Governor's Council on Minnesota's Coastal Program is made up of 15 individuals from throughout the coastal area of Carlton, Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties as well as statewide with a passion for Lake Superior and the desire to make a difference. They are directly appointed by the Governor.
Actions of the Coastal Council are essential to the implementation of a wide variety of projects and activities which contribute to the betterment of the coastal area. Councilors have a vital role in several areas including recommending program priorities, evaluating and recommending projects for funding and evaluating Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program’s performance.
The Office of the Secretary of State is accepting applications for someone with knowledge and interest in Lake Superior. Experience reviewing grant applications is helpful, but not required. Council members are not compensated, but do receive travel reimbursement and training. The time commitment is approximately 50 hours per year. Meetings are held at various locations within the coastal boundary including Duluth, Cloquet, Two Harbors, and Grand Marais.
Current vacancies exist in Cook and Carlton counties.
Interested individuals should download an application from the Office of the Secretary of State.
A complete application package includes a cover letter, the application form, a current resume and a resolution of support from a local unit of government (e.g., city council, town board, or county board of commissioners). The resolution of support is not necessary for applicants living outside Carlton, Cook, Lake, or St. Louis Counties.
Completed applications should be submitted directly to the Office of the Secretary of State. The Coastal Program would also appreciate receiving a copy for our records.
