DNR's Water Appropriation Permit Program exists to balance management objectives that include both development and protection of Minnesota's water resources. Minnesota Law directs the DNR to manage water resources providing for reasonable use while ensuring long-term sustainability and natural resource protection. A water appropriation permit from the DNR is required for all users withdrawing more than 10,000 gallons of water per day or 1 million gallons per year.
PolyMet has submitted the Water Appropriation permit application for the proposed NorthMet project.
DNR's technical experts have reviewed this application for any major omissions. Next, we will initiate review by technical experts from state, local, and tribal governments, as applicable. After DNR completes its full review of the application and considers the input from the other technical experts, we will determine whether to proceed with drafting permits. If we do draft permits, we will then seek public review and input. This will be the public's opportunity to formally engage in the process prior to decisions on this application.
