Form

A small tree, similar to American mountain ash, reaching heights of 20 to 30 feet, with a trunk diameter of 4 to 12 inches. The crown is open and rounded.

Bark

Smooth, gray-brown.

Leaf

Leaves are alternate on the stem, 6 to 8 inches long, and pinnately compound with 11 to 15 leaflets, each 1 1/4 to 2 3/4 inches long and more than one-third as wide. The leaves are bluish green and turn yellow in autumn.

Fruit (seed)

The fruit is a bright red-orange, rounded berry, about 3/8 to 1/2 inch in diameter.

Range

Found in northeastern Minnesota and scattered interior locations. The species is moderately shade intolerant and slow growing.

Wood uses

The wood is light, soft, and weak, with no commercial value except for ornamental purposes.
