Habitat Management Report

WMA:

Schletty WMA

Species:

The WMA is managed to provide habitat for brushland wildlife species.

Objectives

Schletty WMA will be managed to provide cover for a diversity of wildlife species, epecially by maintaining winter cover for ring-necked pheasants, rabbits and other indigenous species.

Wet meadows have been taken over by boxelders, buckthorns and willow thickets and will be managed to restore meadows and seasonal wetlands while preserving some lowland brush habitats for winter cover.

Landscape management goals are to improve and maintain the savanna habitats to benefit indigenous wildlife.

Strategies

This WMA will be monitored for invasive species and control measures implemented as appropriate.

Prescribed burning, cutting and herbicide applications will be utilized to rejuvenate, maintain, or enhance wetland vegetation.

Herbicide will be applied and/or selective harvest will be conducted to remove undesirable tree and brush species in order to maintain or improve habitat structure and diversity.

Prescribed burns will be conducted to maintain or improve habitat structure and diversity.

Some existing poor quality timber types will be converted to grassland with more habitat value to wildlife through prescribed burning and/or cutting and seeding of desired species.

Commercial or non-comercial timber harvests will be conducted to produce young forest stands (primarily aspen) and forest game bird habitat.
