Habitat Management Report

WMAs:

Golden Valley WMA, Skime WMA, and Wannaska WMA

Species:

The WMA is managed to provide habitat for forest song birds, forest game birds, small mammals, furbearers, reptiles, amphibians, deciduous forest species, coniferous forest species, boreal forest species, hardwood forest species, brushland wildlife species, wetland species, raptors, song birds, cavity nesting birds, deer, moose, and wood ducks.

Objectives

Upland forest management objectives on these units will include the provision of young forest habitat with old forest components retained; managing for large forest patches with connections maintained between patches; maintenance of key wildlife forage species (e.g. mast and berry producers); and provision of thermal cover for deer, moose, and other wildlife species.

Openland habitat will be provided for sharp-tailed grouse and other openland-dependent wildlife species.

Wetland/lowland management includes the maintenance of floodplain forest and associated emergent vegetation.

Strategies

Shearing and/or mechanical mowing will be conducted to regenerate brushland habitat.

Inclusions of conifer trees will be retained to enhance the conifer component of stands and maintain/enhance habitat diversity.

Commercial timber harvests will be conducted to produce young forest stands (primarily aspen) and forest game bird habitat.

Prescribed burning will be used to promote natural forest vegetation and regeneration and to maintain or improve habitat structure and diversity.

This WMA will be monitored for invasive species and control measures implemented as appropriate.
