Plan amendments will enable the use of tree removal for resource management projects.
Amendment: forest health resource management
The draft amendments would recognize the use of tree removal as a resource management tool in these state parks and state recreation areas. This would allow DNR to selectively remove ash trees affected by emerald ash borers along roadways and in public use areas.
The Parks and Trails Division uses forest health management as a tool to meet its resource management goals and to facilitate interpretive and recreation activities. Tree removal takes place in state parks and state recreation areas primarily to restore or manage native plant communities. In some cases, removal is necessary to manage impacts on forests caused by insects or disease. It also can be used to restore visitor access and safety by clearing trails and reducing the risk of forest fires from downed timber following a storm.
A management plan sets the direction for the state park or state recreation area for the next 15-20 years and includes recommendations for managing natural and cultural resources and providing recreational and interpretative opportunities to park visitors. The plan amendment will clarify the use of tree removal as a resource management tool in these units.
