Kingsbury Bay/Grassy Point project in St. Louis River Estuary completed

One of Minnesota DNR’s largest habitat restoration projects is complete. The three-year, $18 million construction project in the St. Louis River estuary near Duluth has restored 230 acres of coastal wetland habitat at Kingsbury Bay and Grassy Point.

Minnesota’s waterways were unusually deadly this year, with 17 people losing their lives in boating-related drownings and crashes—the highest number since 2005. And with weeks of open water left this year, there’s a chance that total could climb higher.


DNR accepting applications for coastal area grants

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting grant applications now through Nov. 16 for projects through its Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program. Approximately $500,000 will be available for projects to begin fall 2022. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management provides the funding for these grants.


Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine to host 2022 Minnesota Fish Art Contest

The Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine, in partnership with Wildlife Forever, will host the 2022 Minnesota Fish Art Contest. Open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, this free art competition aims to introduce Minnesota youth to the wonders of fish, the joy of fishing, and the importance of aquatic conservation.

Deer deaths in Houston and Winona counties caused by midge-borne virus

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed two cases of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in wild white-tailed deer in Minnesota. EHD is a viral disease of deer and some livestock that is spread by a biting insect called a midge.

Small fire burning in Itasca State Park

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5, Clearwater County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a fire burning in timber, lowland grasses and brush in a remote location in Itasca State Park, at the end of Bohall Trail and on the north side of Bohall Lake.


Zebra mussel confirmed in Woman Lake in Cass County

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed a report of a zebra mussel in Woman Lake, near Longville in Cass County. Girl Lake will also be added to the infested waters list, because it is downstream of and closely connected to Woman Lake.


Starry Stonewort confirmed in Beltrami County section of Mississippi River

(North Star) for state mineral leases on 800 acres northwest of Emily, Minnesota in Crow Wing County.   North Star is seeking to explore for manganese.  The DNR is seeking public comment on this request for state leases through October 30, 2021.


DNR learns of 2 Minnesota deer farms that received deer from a CWD-positive farm in Wisconsin

On Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources learned that deer farms in Minnesota were among those that received deer from a Wisconsin farm where chronic wasting disease (CWD) was discovered in August 2021. According to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the farm where CWD was detected sold nearly 400 deer to 40 farms in seven states during the past five years.


DNR to hold trapping season permit drawing for Hubbel Pond Wildlife Management Area
