DNR Parks and Trails Friends Groups

What are Friends groups?

Friends groups are community-led groups which:

  • support and enhance a Minnesota state parks and trails facility or recreation activity at several facilities;
  • may or may not be an officially registered non-profit organization;

  • are not an official advisory committee to the DNR, although members may serve on such committees; and

  • are primarily made up of volunteers, but may have paid staff members.

What is required to be an official Friends group of the DNR?

All official DNR Friends groups must complete a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the DNR and coordinate with their "DNR liaison" to develop a goal and project plan each year. Groups must also comply with any other applicable state laws and procedures, as outlined in the MOU.

How do I start a Friends group?

Contact your local DNR park, trail or office to see if they already have a Friends group and start a conversation about what help is needed at that location. For more organizational development resources, visit the Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota.
