Cold July 2009

Preliminary numbers show that July will finish as the 3rd coldest July on record for Minnesota. For some locations, this was the coldest July ever. International Falls shattered its coldest July on record with an average temperature of 58.8 degrees, which broke the old record of 59.4 degrees set in 1992. Rochester had its second coldest July on record with 65.3 degrees, second only to 64.2 degrees set in 1992. July 2009 finished as the third coldest in St. Cloud with 66 degrees.

While the Twin Cities failed to reach the top ten coldest, the monthly average of 70 degrees makes July 2009 the coldest July since 1996. The coldest July on record for the Twin Cities is 1992 with 65.8 degrees. Duluth was also not quite cool enough in July to make it into the top ten.

AIRPORT WAS JUST 86 DEGREES ON THE 27TH. ONLY JULY 1922 /ALSO 86 
DEGREES/ FAILED TO HAVE A WARMER TEMPERATURE IN A JULY.

IN ADDITION...JULY 2009 WAS ONLY THE ELEVENTH JULY SINCE 1873 TO FAIL 
TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE 90 DEGREE DAY. THE LAST TIME THIS OCCURRED WAS 
BACK IN 1993 WHEN THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 87 DEGREES.

WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.6 DEGREES OR 4.4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.
THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH OF 79.5 DEGREES TIED THE YEAR OF 1950 FOR
THE THIRD COOLEST AVERAGE MAXIMUM ON RECORD IN JULY. THE 
COOLEST JULY ON RECORD WAS IN 1992 WITH A CHILLY AVERAGE OF 65.5 DEGREES.

AT SIOUX CITY...IT WAS THE 5TH COOLEST JULY ON RECORD 
WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 70.2 DEGREES... 4.4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.
MOST OF THIS WAS DUE TO THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW OF 58.7 DEGREES...

AT HURON...IT WAS ALSO THE 5TH COOLEST JULY ON RECORD WITH 
AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.5 DEGREES OR 4.9 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.
THE COOLEST JULY ON RECORD WAS AGAIN IN THE VERY COOL JULY OF
1992 WITH AN AVERAGE OF 65.1 DEGREES.
