Ice Storm and Snow: January 10-11, 2013

Ice storm and snow follows balmy weather in Minnesota.

Minnesota lived up to its name as a land of extremes on January 10-11 as a variety of weather conditions moved across the state. Beginning with January 10, warm air surged into Minnesota, and where there was a bit of sunshine temperatures soared into the upper 40's. International Falls had a record high of 48 degrees, breaking the old record of 41 that was set in 2012. Orwell Dam also saw 48 degrees.

Rain surged northward across the state during the afternoon of January 10, out ahead of a frontal system in the Dakotas. The air was warm enough to fall as rain over Minnesota, but the ground was cold enough to have some of this rain freeze in scattered areas during the overnight hours, especially on surfaces that were shaded by the sun from the afternoon before. In central and northern Minnesota, freezing rain fell during the overnight hours and continued on January 11. Some light accumulations were reported, with sidewalks slippery. .2 (two tenths) of an inch of ice accumulated in McGregor by 9:05pm January 10. More than a quarter inch of ice accumulated in Bagley in Clearwater County with horses having extreme difficulty walking short distances.
