Education and awareness

For projects whose main purpose is education and awareness related to stewardship of natural resources.

What this activity area supports

This activity area focuses on education and awareness related to stewardship of air, land, water, forests, fish, wildlife and other natural resources.

Your project may fit this activity area if...

The main result of the project is intended to be learning, awareness, skills or engagement related to natural-resource stewardship.

Important distinctions

  • Education or outreach may be part of another project without being its primary activity area.
  • If the main result is restored habitat rather than the educational experience, Preserve or Enhance Natural Resources may better describe the project.
  • General marketing, branding, fundraising, public relations or promotion is not the same as substantive natural-resource education or stewardship awareness.

Examples of projects that may fit

  • Outdoor education that teaches youth about local natural resources and stewardship.
  • Community workshops that build understanding of a natural-resource issue and practical stewardship skills.
  • Hands-on field experiences or demonstrations focused on natural-resource stewardship.
  • Training volunteers, educators, community leaders or peer educators.
  • Accessible, multilingual, culturally relevant, digital, interpretive or other educational materials with a clear plan for use.

What DNR would need to understand at Stage 1

  • The natural-resource stewardship topic
  • Who the project intends to reach
  • The educational or awareness activity
  • What participants are expected to learn or understand
  • How the activity relates to natural-resource stewardship

What may be worked out later

Curriculum, educational materials, delivery schedules, partnerships, participant engagement and methods for understanding project results may be developed further as required by the funding opportunity.
