Preserve or enhance natural resources

For projects whose main purpose is preserving or enhancing air, land, water or other natural resources.

What this activity area supports

This activity area focuses on preserving or enhancing air, land, water, or other natural resources that otherwise may be substantially impaired or destroyed.

Your project may fit this activity area if...

Your project identifies the natural resource the project is intended to preserve or enhance, the condition or threat affecting it, the proposed action and the expected natural-resource benefit.

Important distinctions

  • A project does not fit this area solely because it occurs outdoors, uses native plants, improves appearance, supports recreation, includes volunteers or generally benefits the environment.
  • General beautification, ordinary landscaping, recreation or property improvement should not be described as natural-resource preservation or enhancement when the natural-resource benefit is incidental.

Examples of projects that may fit

  • Restoring or improving habitat that has been degraded or is threatened.
  • Restoring native vegetation or plant communities to improve ecological condition or function.
  • Reducing erosion where erosion is damaging or threatening a natural resource.
  • Restoring or improving a shoreline, wetland, prairie, grassland, forest or other natural-resource area where the work addresses an identified condition or threat.

What DNR would need to understand at Stage 1

  • The natural resource the project is intended to benefit
  • The current condition, problem, opportunity, or credible threat
  • What the project proposes to do
  • The expected environmental or natural-resource benefit
  • Basic information about where the work would occur.

What may be worked out later

Detailed restoration methods, final designs or specifications, species or material selections, permits and approvals, site-specific technical analysis, maintenance arrangements and other implementation details may be developed later as required by the funding opportunity.
