Existing trail maintenance and improvement

For projects whose main purpose is maintaining or improving an existing state, regional or local trail.

What this activity area supports

This activity area focuses on maintenance and improvement of existing state, regional or local trails. New trails and new trail segments are not eligible under this activity area.

Your project may fit this activity area if...

The project concerns an existing state, regional, or local trail and the proposed grant-funded work is intended to maintain or improve that trail.

Important distinctions

  • A project primarily intended to construct a new trail or new trail segment does not fit this activity area.
  • The Request for Proposals and activity-specific guidance control whether proposed trail work is eligible.

Examples of projects that may fit

  • Repairing or resurfacing the surface of an existing trail.
  • Correcting erosion or drainage problems affecting an existing trail.
  • Repairing or replacing an existing bridge, boardwalk or similar trail feature in place.
  • Addressing accessibility barriers on an existing trail.
  • Rehabilitating deteriorated infrastructure that is part of an existing trail.

What DNR would need to understand at Stage 1

  • What existing trail the project concerns
  • Where the trail or proposed work is located
  • What maintenance or improvement is needed
  • What work the applicant proposes
  • What the project is expected to accomplish.

What may be worked out later

Engineering, detailed design, environmental review, permitting and approvals, construction specifications, procurement and other implementation arrangements may be developed later as required by the funding opportunity.
