Voters chose Gooseberry Falls State Park as the best in the nation among 20 nominees in the USA Today 10BEST Reader’s Choice Awards

Gooseberry Falls State Park took first place in voting for best state park in the USA Today 10BEST Reader’s Choice Awards. Over four weeks, people throughout the U.S. voted on the 20 best state park nominees, which were selected by a panel of USA Today editors and subject matter experts.

“Gooseberry Falls State Park is an iconic example of the incredible natural spaces that make Minnesota a great place to live and visit. Our public lands and waters are truly special, and it’s gratifying to see that people across the nation agree,” said DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen. “Through thoughtful conservation and forward‑looking investments, the DNR is ensuring these spaces remain vibrant, accessible, and welcoming for all. I’m proud that our stewardship leads to memorable experiences for Minnesotans and visitors from across the U.S. and beyond.”

Since its establishment in 1937, Minnesotans and visitors from out-of-state alike have made innumerable North Shore memories at Gooseberry Falls State Park. The park has been the most-visited state park in Minnesota for seven of the last 10 years and has averaged more than 760,000 visitors per year during that time.

"For many years, visitors to the North Shore have been exploring the waterfalls of Gooseberry River and shores of Lake Superior. Miles of scenic trails with vast vista views of the river gorge and Gitchi-Gami have drawn visitors in," said Nate Springer, Gooseberry Falls State Park supervisor. "To have it recognized on the national scale is truly special. Our entire state park system deserves recognition, so we hope people are inspired to explore not only Gooseberry Falls State Park but our other state parks and recreation areas as well. Minnesota has been a leader in state parks for over 125 years as the second state to start a park system in the country. On behalf of the staff at Gooseberry Falls, we welcome you to join us to create your own memories. "

The park’s unique Upper, Middle and Lower falls are a must-see in all seasons. From spring’s powerful rush to winter’s frozen cascades, the falls are a breathtaking backdrop for photos, quiet reflection, or a brisk hike. With more than 20 miles of hiking trails, the park offers routes for all skill levels. Visitors can wander through cedar and spruce forests, follow the Gooseberry River to Lake Superior’s rocky shore, or take the Gitchi-Gami State Trail for a scenic bike ride along the North Shore.

Located just a few miles northeast of Two Harbors, Gooseberry Falls State Park is a perfect stop on a North Shore road trip — or a destination in its own right. Visit mndnr.gov/gooseberry for more information.
