2024-2025 season recap: The first season at the new nest

A new EagleCam was installed on Oct. 7, 2024, at a location near the Mississippi River. The resident pair of eagles had used this nest for at least four years and successfully raised young at this location.

Some time after the installation of the new camera, the eagle pair began building an alternate nest nearby. The alternate nest was still visible on the newly installed camera, and we watched as they brought in nesting materials and settled in. The pair laid two eggs, both of which hatched.

A heavy windstorm in March impacted the camera, and staff were unable to get the alternate nest back on camera. The season was thought to be over until a female mallard took up residence in the eagles’ original, unused nest and laid eggs. She incubated her clutch, and on May 15, eight ducklings hatched. Six followed their mother out of the nest, and two were preyed upon by a bald eagle.

The eaglets were banded in on May 16. Both appeared healthy and were believed to be female. Both fledged the nest.

2013-2023: The first EagleCam

For 10 years, thousands of viewers from around the world tuned in to watch the first EagleCam. This nest, located near the Twin Cities, offered an intimate view of a breeding bald eagle pair. There were a few different occupants over the years, and the nest successfully fledged many bald eagle chicks.

On the morning of April 2, 2023, the original EagleCam nest fell from the tree. Heavy snow from a spring snow storm, in combination with the already massive weight of the nest (which weighed over 2,000 pounds), caused the nest's supporting branch to break.

While the current EagleCam features a new nest at a new location, the original EagleCam camera remained installed at the former nest site where the former EagleCam pair occasionally visits. Visit 10 Years of the EagleCam to learn more about the original nest, and our EagleCam webpage to enjoy a view of how the former EagleCam site looks today.

2024-2025 EagleCam season

This was an exciting occasion for our EagleCam team. This was the first banding of EagleCam chicks since the original EagleCam nest fell in 2023. The EagleCam eaglets were banded in May 2025. Both eaglets appeared healthy and were believed to be female.

This is the first time in three years that chicks have been banded.

Measuring the eagle chick's beak.

Measuring the eagle chick’s foot to help determine its sex.

Measuring the longest feather of the wing.

Someday, the band may help reveal where the birds have traveled and how long they’ve survived.
