Enjoy self-guided hikes with glow sticks and flashlights
Ready to explore Flandrau State Park in a new light? The public is invited to join the annual glow hike event, starting at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.
“This is a fun, family friendly night adventure on the trails,” said Natalie Brinson, Flandrau State Park supervisor. “There will be self-guided hikes, naturalist-led activities, education on nocturnal creatures and more.”
The trail is a one-mile loop, flat and suitable for people of all ages. Because the path is not paved, guests are encouraged to wear sturdy and comfortable shoes. DNR staff recommend that hikers bring glow sticks, wear glow-in-the-dark paint, and/or bring flashlights.
Concessions will be provided by the New Ulm Optimist Club. Guests can bring their own glow sticks or purchase some from the concessions stand.
Attendees should meet at the park’s beach house for check-in from 7-7:30 p.m., with self-guided hikes starting at 7:30 p.m. Parking is available in the beach house parking lot.
Visitors need a vehicle permit to enter Minnesota state parks and recreation areas. The DNR recommends buying permits in advance ($7 per day or $35 for a year-round permit) on the DNR permit webpage. Permits are also available in person at the state park office. Participating public libraries throughout Minnesota also offer free seven-day park passes; people should check their local library for more information.
In the event of severe weather, call 507-233-1260 for updates or check visitor alerts on the Flandrau State Park webpage.
