Designation
The Cannon River was added to Minnesota's Wild and Scenic Rivers Program in 1980. The designated stretch extends from Faribault to its confluence with the Mississippi River.
Classification
The Cannon River has segments in both "scenic" and "recreational" classifications. (see: general information on river classification).
Current status
The original management plan for this stretch of the Cannon River was adopted in 1980, and the current rules that govern management of state lands and local land use regulation along the river are contained in Minnesota Rules, chapter 6105.1550 – 6105.1700.
