The trail(s):
Constructed on an abandoned railroad, the trail is generally level. However, the eastern segment between Vinegar Ridge and Houston is more challenging than the western segment with a rather steep, half-mile segment that may not be suitable for all users.
Cross-country skiing is popular on this trail in the winter. Most of the trail is groomed in the winter. There are 30 miles of set track from the Isinours Forest Recreation Area in Preston to the bridge outside of Houston. A Minnesota Ski Pass is required to ski on this trail.
There is no snowmobiling on the trail, although the trail does briefly intersect with the Fillmore and Houston county Grant-in-Aid (GIA) trail system, which provides many miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the area.

Facilities:

  • There is a trail center located in Lanesboro that sell ski passes.
  • Ski rentals available at the Little River General Store in Lanesboro and the Cedar Valley Resort in Whalan.
  • The sites along the river are not maintained in the winter.
